At The Heart of Julian, we know that a getaway can be even more memorable when your four-legged family member comes along. That's why THOJ welcomes dogs and has created guidelines designed to help our Guests, their pets, and the Property all enjoy a comfortable stay.
The Heart of Julian is a dog-friendly property. Dogs are the only pets permitted at the property. Cats, birds, livestock, farm animals, poultry, and all other animals are not permitted, except as otherwise required by applicable law.
We welcome up to two dogs per reservation. When booking your stay, simply include your dog(s) with your reservation so the applicable pet fee can be added and we can properly prepare for your arrival.
This page explains our pet guidelines, including fees, supervision and leash requirements, outdoor areas, Property care, pet waste, and responsibility for pet-related damage or excessive cleaning. These guidelines help us continue offering a genuinely pet-friendly home while keeping THOJ clean, comfortable, and welcoming for every Guest who follows.
Please take a few moments to review the information below before arriving with your dog. With a little care and consideration, you and your best friend can settle in, explore Julian, relax, and feel right at home. 🐾

BRINGING YOUR DOG TO THOJ
We love welcoming four-legged Guests to The Heart of Julian. To help us prepare for your stay and keep your reservation information accurate, please include all dogs traveling with you when making your reservation.
a. Dogs Are Welcome.
THOJ welcomes up to two dogs per reservation. Dogs must be included as part of your reservation before arrival.
b. Pet Fee.
A $75 pet fee, per dog, applies to each reservation. The pet fee helps support the additional preparation and routine cleaning associated with welcoming dogs to the Property.
c. Adding Your Dog When Booking.
When booking directly with THOJ, indicate that you will be traveling with a dog and enter the applicable number of dogs as part of the reservation process. The corresponding pet fee will be included with your reservation charges.
d. Adding a Dog After You've Booked.
If your plans change and you decide to bring a dog after your reservation has already been confirmed, simply message your Host through the reservation messaging system before arrival. We can update your reservation and add the applicable pet fee.
e. Registered Dogs Only.
Only dogs included with the reservation are permitted to stay at the Property. Please let us know in advance if there is any change to the number of dogs accompanying your party.
f. Pet Fee vs. Damage or Excessive Cleaning.
The pet fee covers the additional routine preparation and cleaning associated with a pet-friendly stay. It does not cover pet-related damage or conditions requiring cleaning beyond normal turnover.
If the Property is left in a condition requiring extraordinary cleaning, THOJ's generally applicable $150 Excessive Cleaning Fee may apply. Professional or specialized services, including carpet or upholstery cleaning, stain treatment, odor remediation, repair, or replacement, may result in additional charges based on the reasonable actual cost of the services required.
These circumstances are addressed in greater detail under Pet-Related Damage & Excessive Cleaning.

PET GUIDELINES & GUEST RESPONSIBILITIES
We want dogs and their families to feel comfortable at The Heart of Julian while helping us maintain a clean, safe, and enjoyable home for everyone. Guests traveling with dogs are responsible for their care, behavior, and supervision throughout the stay.
a. House-Trained Dogs.
Dogs staying at THOJ must be house-trained and accustomed to staying indoors. Guests are responsible for promptly cleaning and reporting any accidents that occur inside the home.
b. Appropriate Behavior.
Dogs should be well-behaved and reasonably controlled at all times. Excessive barking, aggressive behavior, destructive behavior, or other conduct that interferes with neighboring properties or creates a safety concern is not permitted.
c. Guest Responsibility.
The primary Guest is responsible for the care and conduct of all dogs included with the reservation and for ensuring that everyone in the Guest's party follows THOJ's pet guidelines.
d. Protecting the Property.
Guests are responsible for preventing dogs from scratching doors, damaging furnishings, chewing household items, digging, or otherwise causing damage to the home or Property.
e. Health, Comfort & Supplies.
Guests are responsible for bringing the food, medications, bedding, restraints, waste bags, and other supplies their dog may require during the stay. Bringing familiar items from home can also help your dog become comfortable in new surroundings.
f. Travel Crate or Kennel Recommended.
Guests are encouraged to bring a travel crate or kennel if their dog is already accustomed to using one. A familiar crate can provide your dog with a comfortable and secure place to rest while adjusting to new surroundings and can also help protect the Property during your stay.

LEASHES, YARD & OUTDOOR AREAS
Julian's mountain setting is a wonderful place to enjoy time outdoors with your dog. Because THOJ's outdoor areas are partially fenced and are not intended to function as a fully enclosed dog run, Guests should take appropriate precautions whenever their dogs are outside.
a. Leashes Required Outdoors.
Dogs must be leashed or otherwise under the Guest's direct physical control when outdoors on the Property. Please do not assume that fences, gates, landscaping, or other Property features will safely contain your dog.
b. Partially Fenced Property.
Portions of the Property are fenced; however, the grounds are not completely enclosed or escape-proof. Guests are responsible for supervising their dogs and preventing them from leaving the Property.
c. Gates & Access Areas.
Please be mindful of gates, driveways, walkways, and other access points where a dog could leave the Property. Gates should be returned to their proper position after use and should never be relied upon as the sole means of containing a dog.
d. Outdoor Supervision.
Dogs should not be left outside unattended. This includes the patio, gazebo, yard, balcony, walkways, and other exterior areas of the Property.
e. Wildlife & Mountain Surroundings.
THOJ is located in a mountain environment where wildlife may be present. Guests should remain aware of their surroundings, particularly during early morning, evening, and nighttime hours, and keep dogs appropriately restrained and supervised.
f. Outdoor Amenities.
Dogs should be kept a safe distance from the fire pit, grill, propane equipment, and other outdoor amenities while they are in use. Guests are responsible for ensuring that their dogs do not interfere with equipment or create a safety hazard.
g. Exploring Beyond the Property.
When enjoying Julian with your dog, please follow applicable leash requirements and the rules established by parks, trails, businesses, and other places you visit.

LEAVING DOGS UNATTENDED
We understand that there may be times during your visit when your dog cannot accompany you. If a dog will remain at THOJ while you are away from the Property, please take appropriate precautions to keep your dog comfortable and protect the home.
a. Know Your Dog.
Dogs should only be left at the Property if they are comfortable being alone in an unfamiliar environment and are not prone to excessive barking, anxiety, destructive behavior, or attempts to escape.
b. Crate or Kennel Recommended.
If your dog is accustomed to being crated, we strongly recommend using a familiar travel crate or kennel when leaving your dog at the Property. Dogs should not be placed in a crate or kennel if they are not already comfortable and accustomed to using one.
c. Reasonable Periods of Time.
Dogs should not be left alone for extended periods. Guests should consider their dog's age, temperament, health, routine, and comfort when determining whether it is appropriate to leave the dog at the Property.
d. Barking or Disturbances.
A dog left at the Property must not create excessive or persistent barking or other disturbances. Because THOJ is located in a quiet residential mountain community, the Guest may be contacted if a dog is causing a disturbance and may be required to return to the Property to address the situation.
e. Secure the Dog Indoors.
Dogs left without their owner must remain inside the home and may not be left unattended in the yard, patio, gazebo, balcony, or other outdoor areas.
f. Property Damage.
The primary Guest remains responsible for any damage, excessive cleaning, odor or stain remediation, or other costs resulting from a dog left at the Property, whether or not the dog was crated.
g. Emergency Contact.
Guests should remain reachable through the reservation messaging system and the contact information provided with the reservation while away from the Property in case an issue involving their dog requires attention.

FURNITURE, BEDDING & PROPERTY CARE
We want your dog to feel comfortable at THOJ while also helping us protect the furnishings, linens, and other features that make the home enjoyable for every Guest.
a. Furniture & Beds.
If your dog is accustomed to being on furniture or beds, please take appropriate precautions to protect THOJ's upholstery, bedding, and linens. Guests are encouraged to bring a pet blanket or covering from home for any surface their dog may use.
b. Bedding & Linens.
Please do not use THOJ's sheets, blankets, comforters, bath towels, hand towels, or washcloths for cleaning or drying your dog, wiping paws, cleaning pet accidents, or other pet-related purposes.
c. Muddy or Wet Paws.
Julian's mountain weather can mean rain, snow, mud, or dusty trails depending on the season. Please clean and dry your dog's paws before allowing them onto furniture, bedding, or carpeted areas.
d. Food & Water.
Please use appropriate bowls for your dog's food and water and take reasonable care to prevent spills or damage to flooring and furnishings. Food should not be left outdoors where it may attract wildlife.
e. Chewing, Scratching & Digging.
Guests are responsible for preventing dogs from chewing furniture or household items, scratching doors or furnishings, digging in landscaped areas, or otherwise damaging the Property.
f. Accidents Happen — Please Let Us Know.
If your dog has an accident or causes a spill, stain, or other issue, please clean the area promptly and notify your Host through the reservation messaging system. Early notice can help us properly address the affected area and may prevent a minor issue from becoming more difficult to remedy.
g. Property Care Responsibility.
Pet-friendly does not mean that normal Property-care expectations are waived. The primary Guest remains responsible for pet-related damage or cleaning beyond the ordinary preparation and cleaning covered by the pet fee.

PET WASTE & CLEAN-UP
Keeping THOJ clean and enjoyable for everyone includes promptly cleaning up after your dog, both inside and outside the home.
a. Pick Up After Your Dog.
Guests are responsible for promptly picking up and properly disposing of all pet waste anywhere on the Property, including the yard, landscaped areas, walkways, patio areas, and other outdoor spaces.
b. Proper Disposal.
Pet waste should be securely bagged and placed in the appropriate outdoor trash receptacle. Please do not leave filled waste bags on the patio, walkways, landscaping, or elsewhere around the Property.
c. Before Check-Out.
Before departing, please take a few moments to check the outdoor areas used by your dog and make sure that all pet waste has been removed and properly disposed of.
d. Indoor Accidents.
If an accident occurs inside the home, please clean the area promptly and notify your Host through the reservation messaging system so that appropriate cleaning or treatment can be arranged when necessary.
e. Additional Cleaning.
Pet waste left on the Property, repeated indoor accidents, or conditions requiring cleaning beyond normal pet-friendly turnover may result in additional cleaning or remediation charges when additional services are reasonably necessary.
f. Help Us Stay Pet-Friendly.
Responsible clean-up helps us protect the Property, maintain our outdoor spaces, and continue welcoming dogs to The Heart of Julian.

PET-RELATED DAMAGE & EXCESSIVE CLEANING
We are happy to welcome dogs to THOJ and recognize that normal pet-friendly stays may require a little additional preparation and cleaning. The pet fee is intended to help cover routine pet-related turnover. It does not cover excessive cleaning, specialized cleaning services, remediation, or damage to the Property.
a. What the Pet Fee Covers.
The $75 per-dog pet fee helps cover the additional routine preparation and cleaning associated with welcoming dogs to the Property. The pet fee is not a damage waiver or insurance policy and does not cover excessive cleaning or pet-related damage.
b. Excessive Pet Cleaning Fee.
If a dog leaves the Property in a condition requiring cleaning beyond normal pet-friendly turnover, a $150 Excessive Pet Cleaning Fee may be charged. Examples include excessive pet hair, significant soiling, repeated indoor accidents, pet waste left on the Property, or excessive cleaning of furniture, bedding, rugs, floors, or other surfaces.
c. Specialized or Third-Party Cleaning Services.
The Excessive Pet Cleaning Fee does not include specialized or third-party services that may be reasonably necessary to restore the Property. If additional services are required—such as professional carpet or upholstery cleaning, stain treatment, odor remediation, or other specialized cleaning—the actual cost of those services may be charged in addition to the $150 Excessive Pet Cleaning Fee.
d. Pet-Related Damage.
The primary Guest is responsible for damage caused by any dog included with the reservation. This may include damage to furniture, doors, flooring, rugs, bedding, linens, screens, landscaping, or other furnishings or features of the Property. Reasonable repair or replacement costs may be charged separately from cleaning fees.
e. Report Problems Promptly.
Accidents can happen. If your dog causes damage, staining, or another issue during your stay, please notify your Host through the reservation messaging system as soon as reasonably possible. Prompt notice gives us the best opportunity to address the issue before additional damage or remediation becomes necessary.
f. Documentation of Additional Costs.
When specialized cleaning, remediation, repair, or replacement is required, additional charges may be supported by photographs, service invoices, repair estimates, receipts, or other documentation reasonably establishing the condition and associated cost.
g. Guest Responsibility.
The primary Guest remains responsible for their dog's conduct and for applicable pet-related cleaning, remediation, repair, or replacement costs attributable to the reservation, subject to the Lodging Agreement and any applicable booking-platform procedures.

SERVICE ANIMALS
The Heart of Julian welcomes Guests with disabilities and accommodates qualifying service animals in accordance with applicable law. Service animals are working animals and are not treated as pets where applicable law provides otherwise. Accordingly, THOJ's ordinary pet fee does not apply to a qualifying service animal.
a. Please Notify THOJ When an Animal Will Accompany Your Stay.
THOJ requires Guests to notify us when an animal will be staying at the Property, including a qualifying service animal, so that reservation records accurately reflect animals present at the Property and appropriate preparations can be made.
For a service animal, this notification is for reservation administration and Property preparation and does not convert the service animal into a pet or subject the Guest to THOJ's ordinary pet fee.
b. No Pet Fee for Qualifying Service Animals.
A qualifying service animal is not subject to THOJ's $75 per-dog pet fee. THOJ does not impose a pet fee or other surcharge solely because a Guest is accompanied by a qualifying service animal.
c. Service Animal Inquiries.
When the service provided by the animal is not apparent, THOJ will limit any inquiries to those permitted by applicable law. THOJ does not require special identification, certification, registration, or proof of professional training for a qualifying service animal.
d. Care, Supervision & Control.
The Guest or handler is responsible for the service animal's care and supervision throughout the stay. The animal must remain under the handler's control as required by applicable law. THOJ is not responsible for feeding, supervising, toileting, or otherwise caring for a service animal.
e. Waste & Property Care.
Guests traveling with service animals remain responsible for appropriately disposing of animal waste and taking reasonable care of the Property.
f. Ordinary Cleaning.
THOJ will not impose an additional cleaning charge simply because a qualifying service animal stayed at the Property. Ordinary cleaning associated with accommodating a service animal will not be treated as a pet surcharge.
g. Extraordinary Cleaning.
All Guests are expected to leave the Property in a condition consistent with THOJ's generally applicable Property-care standards. If the Property is left in a condition requiring extraordinary cleaning beyond normal turnover, THOJ's generally applicable $150 Excessive Cleaning Fee may apply where permitted by law.
The fee is based upon the condition in which the Property is left and the extraordinary cleaning required, rather than the presence or use of a service animal.
h. Specialized Cleaning or Remediation.
If conditions left at the Property require additional professional or specialized services, including professional carpet or upholstery cleaning, stain treatment, odor remediation, or other specialized cleaning, the reasonable actual cost of those services may be charged in addition to any generally applicable excessive-cleaning fee, where permitted by law.
i. Actual Property Damage.
Guests remain responsible for actual damage caused by a service animal to the same extent THOJ normally holds Guests responsible for damage they cause. Reasonable repair or replacement costs may therefore be charged when warranted and permitted by law. The ADA expressly allows a business that normally charges Guests for damage they cause to similarly charge for damage caused by a service animal.
j. Questions or Accommodation Requests.
Guests who have questions regarding a service animal or require a disability-related accommodation are welcome to contact THOJ before their stay so that we can assist with their reservation.
